# Linking a device

> Learn how to activate and link a device to a venue.

Linking a device means assigned one of your Taxi Butlers to a venue in the PORTAL. It will load all of your [device configurations & options](/fleets/portal/venues/configuring-devices), pick-up address and other information onto the device. A device can only be linked to one venue. You can, however, add multiple devices to the same venue.

If you've just [added a new venue](/fleets/portal/venues/adding-a-venue), you will automatically be prompted to link a Taxi Butler to that venue and enter the activation code.

  <Step title="Power-on your device">
    Start by powering on your device. The first time you power it on, an activation code will be shown on screen.

    The activation code will appear on-screen again when the device has been [unlinked from a venue](/fleets/portal/venues/unlinking-a-device).

  <Step title="Enter the activation code">
    To link a device to an existing venue, go to the [“Venues” page](/fleets/portal/pages/venues) and select the venue you want to add the device to.

    Click on the [“Taxi Butler(s) at venue” tab](/fleets/portal/pages/venues#the-venue-page). Next, click on the "Add Butler to venue" button.

    The PORTAL will now prompt you to add a device to this venue. Enter the activation code found on the screen of the device into the PORTAL and press "Save".

      As mentioned above, if you've just [added a new venue](/fleets/portal/venues/adding-a-venue), you'll automatically be prompted to enter the activation code for a device.

  <Step title="Activate the device">
    You must now activate your device by confirming on the device itself.

    Device activation is done differently depending on the type of device.
